HMRC Investigations
Since the merger of Inland Revenue with HM Customs and Excise there has been an increased focus in the approach of HMRC to tax compliance. HMRC are intent on closing “the tax gap” and is ever more aggressive in the way in which it handles investigations and disputes with taxpayers.
Tax investigations can be stressful, costly and time consuming. We firmly believe that open, early discussion with HMRC is an important strategy in obtaining the best possible outcome for clients. To avoid unnecessary costs, we try and avoid litigation where possible.
Civil investigations
With staff including former senior Government lawyers, The Khan Partnership is in a unique position to advise on all aspects of direct and indirect tax investigations. We know how HMRC works. Whether you require our assistance with an aspect enquiry or a case of suspected serious fraud under Code of Practice 9, or simply the negotiation of penalties with HMRC, our experience will help you achieve the optimal outcome.
Criminal investigations
We have considerable expertise in advising clients who are subject to a criminal investigation launched by HMRC. We are involved in matters at all stages including:
- Attendance at the initial search and seizure at clients' private and work premises
- Attendance at interviews under caution
- Representation post-charge during any resulting criminal prosecution.
We are also experienced in advising in respect of related seizures and forfeiture of cash under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.
